Three state programs will receive a total of $63 million due to budget officials allocating the money to them, MinnPost reports.
Minnesota Management and Budget Commissioner Myron Frans announced earlier this month that the money would be allocated to help with school safety, to refill the disaster relief fund and expand the Metro Mobility program for the elderly and disabled. The money was released after it had previously been allocated with the stipulation that it could only be released if state tax collections exceeded the forecast between February and June by at least $63 million.
The school safety grants will provide money to all schools and can be used for school personnel, MinnPost reported. The initial grant required schools to apply for the money.
State Sen. Carla Nelson (R-Rochester) told MinnPost she was initially not happy that the money was contingent on having a surplus in the state budget, but was happy that it was available now. School safety grants are a priority for Nelson, MinnPost reports.
