CITY OF ANDOVER: Scammers Have Been Calling Individuals Identifying Themselves As Law Enforcement Employees Of Anoka County Sheriff's Office

Scamcall

City of Andover issued the following announcement on Nov. 7.

Recently we have learned that scammers have been calling individuals identifying themselves as law enforcement employees of the Anoka County Sheriff's Office. They have been telling unsuspecting victims they owe money and giving them fake case numbers, as well as representing themselves with actual employee names. The unsuspecting victim may see that the phone number shows up as the ACSO’s number, when in reality, it's just a scammer using technology in order to gain a little credibility. Scammers may use any law enforcement agency's name as part of their ploy. The scammer then tries to scare the victim into paying the fine via banking information, purchase of gift cards, money transfer, etc.

There are many versions of this scam, all designed to scare the victim into immediate action. We will NEVER call you and attempt to collect money by phone. If you ever receive a call from someone identifying themselves as an employee of the ACSO and are unsure of their validity, please hang up and give us a call at 763-324-5000.  You can also call 763-427-1212 and ask to speak to a ACSO supervisor on duty.

Please share this with family and friends, especially those that are the most vulnerable in the aging population.
