Reading Corps tutors make lifelong impact on students, and sometimes, themselves

22

(05/03/2022) Since 2014-15, the Anoka-Hennepin School District has utilized Reading Corps tutors to help students gain the necessary reading skills that impact their lives well after their time in elementary school. For the tutors, the experience of working with the students is rewarding and sometimes leads to them pursuing additional education to become teachers.

“I love seeing the kids improve, grow, and succeed with their reading goals,” said Sarah Goar, Ramsey Elementary School Reading Corps tutor. “It’s amazing to see the confidence emerge and the smiles and happiness they show when things click and they really start to get it!”

Reading Corps is currently hiring tutors for Anoka-Hennepin schools for 2022-23. Three different positions are available for people interested in helping kindergarten through third grade students become better readers through extra practice and skill-building exercises.

Positions available are:

  • Full-time - 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day
  • Part-time - 25 hours/week, 5 hours/day
  • Reduced part-time - 18 hours/week, 3.6 hours/day
Currently, 83.8% of Reading Corps students are meeting or exceeding target growth rates, which is directly related to the work of the dedicated Reading Corps staff. Tutors provide structured literacy interventions to select K-3 students. Interventions are 20 minutes long and can be taught individually or in pairs.

“I tutor because I want to give back to the community,” said Tyler Wadd, a Reading Corps tutor at McKinley Elementary School. “When I was in third grade my reading skills were below average. With the help of a tutor, working everyday for 20 minutes, I learned a different way to approach reading that changed my life. Providing children with the skills they need to become an even better reader is vital to their experience in school.”

With training and on-site coaching, Reading Corps tutors help students succeed. Tutors are needed all school year, and the positions have the option of starting in August, October or January. Tutors follow the Anoka-Hennepin teacher calendar for their service year. They have opportunities to participate in district professional development as well as Ampact Professional Development.

After working as Reading Corps tutors, both Goar and Wadd are currently working on additional education to become elementary school teachers. Goar applied for and was accepted into the Minnesota Grow your Own Teachers (MNGOT) Program. Through this program, she will tutor full-time while attending classes at the University of Minnesota to earn a master’s degree in education and a K-6 licensure to become a teacher in two years. Crystal Loken at Monroe Elementary School is also in the MNGOT Program to become a full-time teacher.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the positions are filled. Search for positions across Anoka-Hennepin and learn more about Reading Corps at join.readingandmath.org.
