School communities across the nation are operating in the aftermath of tragic school violence, providing support for students, staff and families following the horrific events that occurred at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Our hearts go out to the families in that community as they process this unimaginable loss.
Parents and guardians may choose to discuss this matter with children at home. The National Association of School Psychologists has developed age appropriate resources to help guide those discussions. Children may also experience strong feelings in response to such news and may require additional support. Please be aware that Anoka-Hennepin Schools has support staff for students who may need assistance. Contact your child’s school to share any concerns and discuss the support options available for your student. Please continue to monitor your children as feelings and behaviors may shift regarding this incident as new information is shared in the days and weeks to come.
Anoka-Hennepin Schools have taken many steps to ensure the safety and security of our students and schools. Exterior school doors are locked and visitors must pass through a secured front door and show identification prior to entering. Portable classrooms across the district were removed and entrance security was enhanced following the 2017 Fit for the Future referendum. The district upgraded communication tools and video surveillance across the system. Finally, the district maintains strong relationships with local law enforcement and police liaison officers assigned to schools to collaboratively assess and address threats towards students and the school.
The safety of students and staff is our first priority as a school system. Thank you for your ongoing support of our students, staff members and families during this challenging time.
