Discounted Home Energy Audits

Green Homes is a home energy efficiency incentives program. Coon Rapids wants to help residents reduce their utility bills and increase the energy efficiency of their homes. Not only does increasing the efficiency of your home help save you money on utilities, it also makes your home more comfortable and durable for the years (and cold winters) to come.

One component of the program is getting an energy evaluation done by the Home Energy Squad. With funding through the City's Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA), Coon Rapids is subsidizing half the cost of each visit:

Energy Saver Visit Fee

$35 for newer houses (built in 2000 or after), mobile homes, condos and renters (regularly $75)

Energy Planner Visit Fee

$50 for homes built before 2000 (regularly $100)

The Home Energy Squad is run by Xcel Energy and CenterPoint Energy. A two-person team will come to your home and install energy-saving items like programmable thermostats and high-efficiency water fixtures. For older homes, the crew also performs a blower test to measure for air leaks, completes an insulation inspection of your attic and walls using an infrared camera, and performs a safety test on your furnace and water heater. Xcel customers also get LED lightbulbs. Then, the energy advisors recommend next steps and connect you with resources to find contractors, financing and rebates. A second component of the Green Homes program involves rebates on energy efficiency projects. Learn more about the Green Homes program here.

Homes and commercial buildings consume 40% of the energy used in the United States. Of the $2,000 the average American spends paying for energy annually, $200 to $400 could be going to waste from drafts, air leaks around openings, and outdated heating and cooling systems. By reducing these losses through energy efficiency upgrades, you can save money and be more comfortable in your home or business.
