The regular legislative session in Minnesota concluded at the end of Monday, but unfinished committee work means lawmakers will return for a special session. Representative Bryan Lawrence stated that the date for this special session has not yet been determined.
Among the legislative accomplishments highlighted by Lawrence is a pension reform bill aimed at improving benefits for teachers, police officers, and firefighters. The legislation allows teachers to retire early at age 60 with 30 years of service, reduces penalties for early retirement, and allocates $40 million each to teacher pensions and to police and fire funds. "It’s not perfect, but it’s a step in the right direction," Lawrence said.
Efforts to address government fraud were also included in the State Government and Human Services bills. According to Lawrence, these measures include new protections for whistleblowers and require state agencies to report annually on how they are responding to concerns raised by the Office of the Legislative Auditor. "Minnesotans deserve to know their tax dollars are being used wisely. This helps restore some much-needed accountability," he said.
Lawmakers passed changes designed to improve behavioral health and substance use systems in Minnesota. The reforms clarify responsibilities for the Human Services Commissioner, establish a new board for care programs, simplify provider licensing processes, and revise civil commitment rules with an emphasis on better coordination while maintaining individual rights.
Governor Tim Walz has signed into law an agriculture bill developed during this session. Lawrence emphasized its importance for rural communities: "I’m proud of the work we did to deliver this. Rural communities, including the folks I represent, deserve real results."
Lawrence also described his recent visit to a local Montessori School where students presented projects about state government and their representative. He noted that such experiences underscore the importance of building a functional government for future generations: "It was a good reminder that our kids are paying attention, and it’s on us to leave them with a government that works."
Looking ahead to the upcoming special session, Lawrence expressed his commitment to advancing a responsible budget focused on taxpayer interests and priorities important to Greater Minnesota.
