State Rep. Kurt Daudt stood before the Minnesota House on June 12 and presented data that showed how Gov. Tim Walz's exercise of executive powers during COVID-19 has crippled the state's economy and failed to protect some of the state's most vulnerable residents.
Daudt and other Republicans said Walz has taken away the rightful authority of the Legislature and stood in the way of allowing Minnesotans to make decisions specific to their situations. Republicans have been calling on Walz to lift the peacetime emergency declaration since early May.
The number of coronavirus deaths across the state has risen to nearly 1,400. Of those deaths, nearly 1,000 were residents of long term care facilities. More than 30,000 in the state have tested positive for the virus.
The Senate voted to lift the governor's emergency powers, but the measure did not pass in the House. Walz's declaration of a peacetime emergency will extend through July 13.
