State Rep. John Heinrich (R-Anoka) wants an end to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s COVID-19 “peacetime emergency.”
“It has now been nearly 130 days since the governor declared this peacetime emergency,” Heinrich wrote in a note to constituents July 17. “Both the House and Senate have voted multiple times on whether to end the peacetime emergency. This would allow the branch of government closest to the people of Minnesota to have a voice in how the state responds to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
But a resolution to end the governor’s emergency powers failed in the House, Heinrich said.
“Unfortunately, House Democrats blocked the resolution yet again, and the governor keeps his expanded executive powers for at least another month,” he wrote.
On July 22, Walz signed an executive order requiring residents to wear masks when they are in any public indoor space, including businesses.
"By combating the spread of COVID-19, masking will help protect our neighbors, keep our businesses open, and get us on track to return to the activities we love,” Walz said in a statement.
