A new statewide industry Drug Disposal Awareness Program has been announced by the Minnesota Grocers Association (MGA) and Rx Abuse Leadership Initiative.

The new program will help take the state in the right direction for preventing substance misuse and addiction, according to a press release from the Minnesota Grocers Association

“We are proud to play a role in this collective effort to end opioid abuse in Minnesota,” Jamie Pfuhl, president of the MGA, said in the press release. “As a community partner, we are pleased to be able to provide a resource to our neighbors.”

It's important to take steps like these to prevent substance abuse and addiction and this process starts in our homes. Rx Abuse Leadership Initiative will be giving out free disposal pouches to help people properly dispose of expired or unwanted medications. The pouches can be picked up at many local grocery stores.

"Safe disposal of medications is integral to the process of fighting the opioid epidemic and substance misuse," Sen. Michelle Benson said in a Facebook post. "The Minnesota Grocer's Association is now distributing free medication disposal pouches with their Drug Disposal Awareness Program to aid in this effort."
